Beneath the Golden Crown: reading Silla adornment in Shanghai
Shanghai Museum / Gyeongju National MuseumGold crowns, belts and glass beads reveal different ways of arranging ornament around the body at the Shanghai Museum.

The exhibition and its works
Beneath the Golden Crown: Highlights of Silla’s Treasures runs at Shanghai Museum East from 23 September 2026 to 18 January 2027. Organised with Gyeongju National Museum, it explores gold culture, international exchange and Buddhist art. The second-floor presentation includes a gold crown, gold belt and glass pectoral necklace alongside other objects; it is broader than a jewellery-only display.
The JEWEL DAILY perspective
JEWEL DAILY suggests comparing three directions: the crown rises above the head, the belt suspends elements below the waist, and rows of blue glass beads organise the chest. These photographs make the structures readable. How they respond to movement and communicate identity remains a useful question for the gallery. Glass beads should not be described as sapphires, and a photograph alone cannot establish a precise hierarchy of rank.
