NGV places metal, shell and the body at the centre of its presentation of Australian jewellery from 1960–2020.

The exhibition and its works

Made to Move is on level 3 of The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square, Melbourne. It opened on 18 September 2025 and is listed through February 2027; the museum has not specified a closing day. The presentation includes First Peoples and successive generations of Australian makers. Our images show works by Carlier Makigawa, Maree Clarke and Marian Hosking.

The JEWEL DAILY perspective

JEWEL DAILY suggests looking at weight, open space and points of contact. Makigawa’s silver neckpiece builds volume from open lines; Clarke’s necklace focuses attention on its two kangaroo-tooth forms; Hosking lets shell colour and a cut-out silhouette work together. A still image communicates form, not the full experience of wearing it. First Peoples works should also be read through the artists’ and museum’s cultural context, without assigning meanings from appearance alone.
