The exhibition and its works

Qatar Museums, with L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, presents Around the World in Jewellery at M7 Doha from 27 October to 26 December 2026. Its 500-plus objects include jewellery, artworks, photographs and sculptures, not solely jewels. Seven themes include body adornment, status and nature. Illustrated here are the Patiala turban ornament and Lucien Gautrait’s hornet brooch, circa 1900.

The JEWEL DAILY perspective

JEWEL DAILY sees two useful entry points. The turban ornament spreads sideways with gems suspended along its edge, showing how adornment can amplify presence. Gautrait uses an irregular baroque pearl to suggest a hornet’s nest and translucent enamel for the wings. One comparison begins with social setting, the other with material imagination. Cross-cultural viewing works best when each object retains its own context rather than receiving a single universal symbolic explanation.
