Around 350 works place postwar Japan within a wider conversation about jewellery as artistic expression.

The exhibition and its works

Reflections in Jewellery: Memory and Identity runs at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, from 24 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. It includes Hiramatsu Yasuki, Otto Künzli and works from HIKO MIZUNO COLLEGE OF JEWELRY. The closing date follows the museum’s detailed Japanese exhibition information.

The JEWEL DAILY perspective

For JEWEL DAILY, the productive comparison is between material and perceived value. Hiramatsu’s 1977 brooches turn the worked surface of gold into shape and light. Künzli’s The Swiss Gold Brooch uses cardboard and acrylic while borrowing the visual authority of a gold bar. Together they invite a question: does jewellery display material wealth, social identity or a way of seeing? These are artworks in an exhibition, not a new commercial collection.
