CIBJO considers accountability for AI in gemstone reporting
CIBJOProposed guidance would subject AI and machine-learning tools to the quality controls applied to conventional methods.
The announcement
At the CIBJO Congress in Vicenza on 7 September 2026, Gemmological Commission chair Hanco Zwaan outlined proposed guidance on AI and machine learning. Systems used for testing, grading, interpretation or decision support would face the same quality assurance, control and verification requirements as conventional methods. This was an industry-guidance proposal, not an announcement of a law taking effect.
JEWEL DAILY perspective
JEWEL DAILY focuses on responsibility for the final report. Automated analysis can participate without making validation, exception review or accountability less clear. Clients need to understand the tool’s scope and the arrangements for human review. The discussion concerns verifiable results: mentioning AI does not establish higher accuracy, nor does it demonstrate that conventional testing has been replaced.
