De Beers introduces SynthDetect 2: full-tray diamond screening in under five minutes
JEWEL DAILYThe new desktop instrument adds automation and reporting features. The scanning speed increase announced by the company addresses batch-screening needs in jewellery production and retailers’ back-office operations.
Changes in batch-screening time
De Beers’ Science & Technology division introduced SynthDetect 2 on 15 September 2026. The company says the desktop diamond-screening instrument reduces a full-tray scan from around 30 minutes to under five minutes and can screen a wider range of diamonds and jewellery. Automatically generated reports and software updates are also part of the upgrade. These performance claims come from the manufacturer; no independent testing was conducted for this article.
Editorial observation: manufacturers, laboratories and retailers’ back-office teams should assess such equipment in relation to the actual construction of the jewellery, batch sizes and operating procedures, rather than relying on a single speed figure. The announcement emphasises automation but provides no explanation of artificial-intelligence technology, so this site classifies it as news about diamond-screening technology.
