THE JEWELRY GUIDE

What is permanent jewelry? How welded chains work

Permanent jewelry is fitted and welded closed instead of fastened with a clasp. Explore the process, removal, materials and questions to ask before an appointment.

A closed chain, without a clasp

A jeweler fits a chain and welds its connecting link closed. Catbird calls this service “zapping” and offers fitted 14k solid-gold bracelets and necklaces. The chain is joined to itself, not attached to your skin. “Permanent” describes how it is worn; it is not a guarantee that it cannot break.

Can you take it off?

Yes. Catbird says its fine chains can be removed by cutting the connecting ring, and may be welded again under its service terms. Astrid & Miyu also lists re-welding appointments. Keep the chain and contact the provider for instructions; removal and re-welding are not the same as opening a regular clasp. Availability, eligibility and fees vary.

The service name does not identify the metal

Ask which metal and karat you are choosing, how the chain fits when you move, and what the quoted price includes. Check whether charms, repairs or re-welding cost extra. A welded closure does not make plated metal into solid gold, and it does not make every chain suitable for every activity.

Before you book

Tell the provider if you routinely need to remove jewelry for work, sport or a scheduled procedure, and follow the relevant removal requirements. Review the studio’s age and eligibility rules before booking. Catbird specifically advises customers with pacemakers not to use its welding service. A clasped version may better suit someone who needs regular removal.
